Wayne Pennycook

Wayne Pennycook is the past VP of Operations Health & Safety at Cenovus Energy.  He has stepped down from that position and is currently working six months of the year as a Senior Advisor to Operations at Cenovus.

Wayne has over 49 years of experience in the oil and gas business, starting as a roughneck on the service rigs in 1964. Throughout his career, he has progressed through supervisory and management levels in operations, worked with various organizational change gurus on organizational effectiveness and coordinated a world-wide research effort which focused on the design of systems and processes to reduce the potential for human error. This research work has been referenced in several industry publications over the years, including two books written on the topic of preventing human error in the Chemical Process industries. After consulting on the topic of Operational Excellence for several years, Wayne joined Encana and now Cenovus in October, 2005 as the Operations Superintendent at Christina Lake. In July of 2006, he took on the assignment of Team Lead for the Oil Sands EHS and Regulatory group in Calgary. As a consequence of the split from Encana and the Cenovus re-organization in December 2010, the position of Vice President, Operations Health & Safety was required to provide strategy and directions for Health & Safety practices at Cenovus Energy.

Wayne obtained his CRSP certification in 1996 and is a past member of the Calgary Chapter of the International Coaching Federation.
